In the first novel in James’s Dark Star trilogy, he explores what happens when a mercenary is hired to find a missing child; VanderMeer's new novel is a head-spinning epic quest revolving around portals to an alternate Earth called Aurora, a surreal world filled with talking animals and vegetables.
