Many industries have relied on the multifunctional properties of zinc flake coatings for decades. The automotive industry has especially contributed to the continuous improvement of this technology through its ever-increasing requirements for corrosion protection (NSST and CCT resistance) leading to better durability and quality.
As an innovator, the automotive sector is constantly setting new trends, not only in terms of new technologies, but also in terms of optimized manufacturing processes. Fully automated assembly lines in the automotive manufacturing process create ever greater challenges for the suppliers of fasteners. This includes the demand for weight reduction and the associated downsizing of fasteners, the need for faster assembly to increase productivity as well as cost optimization and higher process reliability.

As a consequence the portfolio of fasteners is being streamlined which has a direct impact on the respective coatings being used. This is leading to coatings being selected that can be applied universally and that work reliably. This requires, on the one hand, coatings that are suitable for different materials ensuring that the fastener has the same assembly properties regardless of whether it is affixed to steel, aluminum or e-coated parts. While on the other hand, they must meet specific requirements for coefficient of friction, heat loosening and corrosion protection.
As a provider of leading solutions for corrosion protection, Atotech has a product portfolio that meets all of these requirements.
  • Zinc flake base coats and top coats – meeting the toughest requirements
  • Electroplated and passivated finishes combined with top coats – meeting highest industry demands
  • How to deal with challenging automotive CoF standards
  • Best practice process sequences
