This particular elicited such a state of amazement within me that I don't know where to begin to ask the Lord to help me. Two insights come to mind: first is the prohibition of taking oaths. Much confusion emerges when the oath or "vow" taken to one's parents includes a hidden yet corrupting sense of deification of the parent. This type of idolatry while understandable goes far beyond the commandment to "honor one's father and mother." In fact Aquinas' insights on this matter are quite insightful as well. Second, was the comment that Francis made when she cites that newcomer's to the community were to "discover certain things for themselves." My experience in direction as a directee and as one who has been prepared to listen knows the importance of honoring the Holy Spirit who is working within the individual. Thus, the development of the Qumran community which was fashioned through listening to the Holy Spirit is honored in the individual by the collective and personal living faith of the members. It is my belief that today we build upon the shoulders of giants when the individual who seeks help with prayer learns that as the Lord has implanted within their soul their direction and he/she is being taught how to listen to the Holy Spirit who may be speak, "I will woo you into the desert and speak to your heart" Hosea. Sometimes the best a spiritual director can do is to stay out of the Lord's way. Oh Francis, what a gift this teaching on the DSS continues to be for me. Thank you so much!

Thank you for your insightful comment Helene. I will deal with oath taking later on in the course because Jesus also forbade us to take oaths in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7. The fact that the community allowed each member his own walk with God was very advanced spirituality, and I believe enhanced their listening to the Holy Spirit and their prophetic role for the People of God.
